Traditional music performances and filmed sessions are largely static, relying on pre-designed visuals or linear stage concepts that cannot meaningfully respond to the performer in real time. As live music increasingly intersects with digital space, there is a growing gap between sound, body, and environment. Existing formats rarely allow artists to actively shape the visual world they perform inside, limiting immersion, expressiveness, and spatial storytelling.

Visionaries introduces a real-time generative XR performance system where sound, movement, and space are fully interconnected. Within Visionaries, ØJE Studio was responsible for the concept development and implementation of a generative real-time XR system. The system translates audio and performer movement into live spatial transformations, allowing the environment to continuously evolve during performance rather than relying on static or pre-rendered visuals.

Visionaries was developed as an exploration of performance as a spatial system rather than a fixed stage.

The project began with the idea of treating the environment as an active participant — a responsive structure shaped by rhythm, movement, and intensity in real time. Instead of designing visuals first and fitting performance inside them, the system was built to grow around the performer, adapting its behavior to each episode.

From the outset, the main challenge was to design a generative XR system that could remain fully alive under real performance conditions. The environments needed to respond instantly to sound and motion, support different artistic identities, and scale across episodes without relying on pre-rendered or linear content.

Additional challenges included maintaining low-latency responsiveness, integrating multi-performer motion tracking, and preserving a coherent visual language while allowing each episode to develop its own spatial character.

Through Visionaries, ØJE Studio established a modular generative framework capable of scaling across artists, styles, and formats, forming the foundation for future immersive performance systems and site-specific XR environments.
